outfit post: navy pencil skirt, olive green portofino shirt, leopard belt, nude wedges

Inspiration - Lulu's.com

Sorry I've been MIA. I got sick last week but had a ton high pressure stuff going on at work. Being under the weather meant I couldn't juggle my normal fifteen thousand home/work/life obligations - so I give myself just two priorities - don't die and don't screw up at work. I was successful at both of those tasks but that meant zero outfit posts after Wednesday. Good news is that work even keeled again this week and I'm feeling much better.

Feeling a little safari chic in this outfit. Really really like the olive green paired with the navy. I feel like one of those InStyle color charts that give you advice on color combinations and says stuff like, "navy pairs great with peach, olive and teal blue!" (Just searched on Pinterest and this combination did not make the charts I found... oh well!)

outfit post: burgundy frond pencil skirt, oatmeal sweater, brown peep toed pumps

Inspiration - Net-a-Porter

One of the good things and frustrating things about this blog is that I have to try to restyle the clothes that I own. It's great to push my creativity and make me look for new and interesting ways to put together the stuff in my closet. But I also feel like I don't get to just say an outfit really worked and wear it on repeat without having to skip posting on those days. Nobody wants a weekly update on an identical outfit. Sweet! MK wore the same outfit again!

This oatmeal sweater was my attempt to style this fun skirt in a new way. It's fine. Not my favorite outfit but not bad. If I hadn't planned on posting an outfit today - I would have just reworn it with black shirt and accessories like I did a few weeks ago.

Goals - Week 15 update:

  1. Start eating healthier - I've been super on point with eating healthy food. Last week I bought a bunch of good-for-you groceries and did a ton of meal prep. Now when I pack my lunch in the morning or wander by the fridge for an evening snack - there is no excuse not to eat something reasonable and yummy.
  2. Walking lots - I drew a giant calendar on my office whiteboard and added Couch to 5k runs mixed in with 21 Day fix workouts on a schedule for the next six weeks! (Used my 4 year anniversary as my target date.) No more trying to decide what workout to do and then ending up doing nothing. I am six days in and doing great. I put a big green X on the date when I completed the appropriate workout and I find it very very satisfying!
    • Weight:
      • Weight - lost 4  lb (Yay! Think this is adjusting for my gain last week but still... yay!)
      • Total weight lost - 16.8 lbs (41.8 lbs since my top pregnancy weight!)
      • 16.2 to go
  3. Post at least 4x a week-
    • Post 4x: 5 posts! Success.

outfit post: one piece - multiple ways graphics

Doing a little spring summer cleaning around the blog and I put together a single page with all the 'one piece - many ways' graphics for easy reference. Will hopefully get some time to do the same thing with all the checklists & big one suitcase graphics... in the meantime click here to check it out.

outfit post: purple sleeveless floral ponte dress, navy boyfriend cardigan, nude wedges

Inspiration - Rachel Roy

This is basically the exact same outfit that I wore last week except I changed the cardigan from lilac to navy blue. Revolutionary! (Can anyone say outfit formula? Hint hint.) I really really love all the colors in this dress. And as an added bonus, I found that I already own every coordinating colored cardigan. Get ready for seeing this dress with white, teal and mustard green cardigans in the coming weeks! Can you even contain your excitement?? :P

On another note, it is already deathly hot here in Florida. Yesterday was a lovely "feels like 105 degrees" with full humidity according to the local weather. It's so hard to get dressed in real clothing and put on real shoes (as opposed to flip flops) when the temperatures are this high. I'm fine when I'm in my office in the a/c but the thought of my typical daily four block walk to Starbucks makes me sweat just considering it. (At least I don't have to take the metro in the middle of summer like when I was working from our DC office.)

outfit post: pink portofino shirt, black 'editor' ankle pants, leopard wedges

Inspiration - Pink Sole

Another inspiration outfit from the super cute Rachelle at Pink Sole. We both share a love of the Express Portofino shirt. I now own four solid colored 'convertible sleeve' tops and one sleeveless polka-dot. And I'm super tempted to pick up a few of the patterned ones. Ack. Must exercise restraint!

Goals - Week 14 update:
Um, so I sorta just skipped last weeks update. I hit a point two weeks ago where I was just tired of everything. Between working full time and the kid and houseguests and husband and blogging and healthy meal prep and exercising and other things I'm sure I'm forgetting... I started to feel a little burnt out about it all. So I decided to just take some time off from worrying about food and weight and focus in and enjoy the other aspects of my life.

I definitely ordered pizza a few nights, hit the drive through a couple of times for lunch and almost polished off an entire round of brie with crackers while socializing. But it was nice to just take a break. Now that I've given myself that mental rest - I'm feeling re-energized and motivated again to try to make another chunk of progress towards fitting back into the rest of my pre-baby closet!

outfit post: foral crepe shell, mustard cardigan, black ankle pants

Inspiration - Michelle Obama

If I had to pick a favorite colored cardigan - which to a cardigan addict like myself is like trying to pick a favorite child - it miiiiigggghhttt be my mustard cardigan. It is always such a fun addition to an outfit: mustard cardigan outfits. Although pretty much any cardigan gives me the warm & fuzzies. :)

outfit post: no-brainer work outfits "The Colored Pant Formula"

There are so many mornings when I wander bleary-eyed into my closet and stare at the clothing zombie-like with zero motivation to be creative with my outfit. I just want to get myself dressed and out the door quickly while still looking presentable for work.

This brain dead "I have no idea what to wear" scenario is when I depend on my tried and true "outfit formula" that was deeply ingrained into my wardrobe psyche by Stacey & Clinton during my many years loving to watch TLC's What Not to Wear.  The formula says: basic piece + interesting piece + cardigan/jacket/completer piece = outfit. This is forever the formula in my brain for getting dressed for work while looking reasonably put together.

Over time that general WNTW formula has developed into a few specific formula patterns in my wardrobe. And since I use this method so regularly - I thought it would make a good set of infographics to share here on the blog. I've been going back through my blog archives to grab some outfit examples of each of those specific formulas I use to share with you.

Over the past few years the trend in stores of colored work pants has really grown. I have joined the fun and own two pairs of cropped trousers. While I do think they are business casual appropriate - when I wear them to the office I make sure to pair them with other more neutral items to keep the outfit professional. I don't want to look like I rolled around in a crayola box before coming to work! The formula I'm sharing today I call, "The Colored Pant Formula":

Colored Pant + Black & White Print Top + Black Blazer/Cardigan = Outfit

1. Colored Pant:
This outfit starts with a pair of colored pants. First, for the bottom, choose your pair of colored work pants. (Could just as easily be a skirt.) The two pairs I own are cobalt blue and burgundy.

2. Black & White Print Top:
Next add a neutral printed top. I like black and white tops because they are super easy, can't go wrong matching the colored pant choices. They can be basic camisole/tanks or bonus points for texture with a tie-neck or ruffle on the shirt.

3. Black Blazer/Cardigan:
Finally, I add a black blazer or cardigan to further tone down the colorful bottom half of the outfit. Easy peasy professional.

When I get dressed using this formula I'm not trying to be a fashion standout - it's just more about looking presentable for work in a hurry. So there is no need to figure out an amazing statement necklace or perfectly coordinating scarf. The pants are the pop in the outfit and everything else is background. I feel like this outfit formula can easily be used over and over again for pulled together professional looks for work.  Just sticking with the same blueprint and switching out the individual pieces - the outfits possibilities are endless!

outfit post: purple sleeveless floral ponte dress, purple/lilac cardigan, nude wedges

Inspiration - Lands End

I loooooove this dress. I love the print and the colors in the print. I love that it's a sheath dress but with stretchy thick fabric that doesn't accentuate my post-baby mid-section. And it's sleeveless which is necessary in Florida. AND it has pockets! Yes yes and yes.

I meant to copy the inspiration photo more closely. I have a similar necklace and a gold belt and really like how they look with the dress. But in my hurry to get ready I didn't have enough time to refer back to the photo and just winged the accessories from what I could remember. Still love the outfit result. Maybe I'll do a re-do this outfit in a few weeks using those other pieces... :)

outfit post: no-brainer work outfits "The Bright Cardigan Formula"

The formula I'm sharing today I call, "The Bright Cardigan" formula.

Neutral Top & Bottom + Bright Cardigan + Classic Accessories = Outfit

1. Neutral Top & Bottom:
This outfit starts with basic wardrobe staples. First, for the bottom, choose a neutral skirt or a favorite neutral pair of work pants. My basic bottoms tend to be black, grey, brown or navy. And then add a neutral top. I like black and white tops as super easy, can't go wrong choices. They can be basic camisole/tanks or bonus points for texture with a tie-neck or ruffle on the shirt.

2. Bright Cardigan:
Next pick a bright cardigan (or jacket) in a color that you love. It can be any color you want because the rest of your outfit is neutral. I try to pick what I think is a fun color because the cardigan is pretty much the only interesting thing about this outfit.

3. Classic Accessories:
Finally add your most classic accessories. Neutral shoes like black pumps or black flats. A simple necklace or your favorite stud earrings.

When I get dressed using this formula I'm not trying to be a fashion standout - it's just more about looking presentable for work in a hurry. So there is no need to figure out an amazing statement necklace or perfectly coordinating scarf. The cardigan is the pop in the outfit and everything else is background. I feel like this outfit formula can easily be used over and over again for pulled together professional looks for work.  Just sticking with the same blueprint and switching out the individual pieces - the outfits possibilities are endless!

Below are some examples of how I've used the "Bright Cardigan" formula:

most popular clothing clicks - may

Because I use affiliate links on this site (I get a few cents each time you guys click a shopping link) I am able to see a dashboard of what items were the most clicked on each week/month. I think it's really interesting to see which clothing links you guys are engaged by and click a bunch. And then compare those to which ones you decide to pass over. Here's the most clicked items for May.

outfit post: grey pants, purple & turquoise shell, purple cardigan, black pumps

Inspiration - Alison Brie from Community

Floral top, colored cardigan & neutral pant = happy mid-week outfit.

Goals - Week 13 update:

  1. Start eating healthier & walking lots -
    • Eating healthier - Wasn't as good as last week about prepping food ahead of time and it shows. No loss this week. When I don't have meals planned out or food I can grab quickly when hunger hits - I tend to eat whatever looks the most yummy.
    • Exercising:  Only 3 days of 10K steps. Sorta fell out of my workout rhythm last week.
    • Weight:
      • Weight lost this week - 0 lb
      • Total weight lost - 14.2 lbs (39.2 lbs since my top pregnancy weight!)
      • 18.8 to go
  2. Post at least 3x a week-
    • Post 4x: 4 posts. Success.

outfit post: aqua pencil skirt, floral crepe shell, grey pointed toe pumps

Inspiration - Frill Clothing

This fun aqua pencil skirt from J. Crew Factory was one of my purchases during my Memorial Day sales online shopping spree. I love the bright color and have lots of ideas for outfits I can put together with other basics I already have.

I really like how bright and summer-y this floral blouse is when paired with the skirt. A bit out of character for my normally somewhat neutral style.  I opted out of colored shoes like the inspiration picture and went with a subtler grey because this outfit was already bright enough for me without adding pink on top of everything else. (I do feel a little Joan from Mad Men - slightly too buxom secretary - because my body is extra top heavy while I'm breastfeeding.) But all in all I'm liking the departure from my norm. :)
