outfit posts - 14 favorites pieces from 2014

->>Row 1:
1. Black Suit Jacket
When I was starting out in the working world the only officially professional thing I owned was the suit I bought for the career fair my junior year of college. As I focused on building my work wardrobe, I often wore the suit pants with various blouses, which was great, but I very rarely wore the suit jacket. At the time it just seemed to me like the jacket only worked as part of the suit. But over the past few years I've tried to get better about using suit jackets to mix and match with other pieces in my closet. I'm trying to teach myself that it doesn't just have to be worn with the pants/skirt that it was purchased with and has lots of opportunities to be worn on a more regular (and less formal) basis. These are some of the outfits that I've come up with...
2. Coral Blazer
I love that adding a blazer on top of basic boring clothing pieces magically pulls them all together and transforms the look from separate items into an "outfit". Before this blazer I only owned black, grey & navy blazers and basically only wore them for work. I wanted to incorporate a fun blazer into my wardrobe for casual looks and this coral one fit the bill. I felt most comfortable wearing this blazer with other pieces that were neutral or lightly patterned because it is so bright and such an attention grabber. Looking at this group of pictures - I think I need to branch out into finding some fun dresses in my closet to wear with it!

3. Jean Jacket
In my book jean jackets are a fundamental closet 'must have' basic. They are wonderful because they never go out of style, they work for all body types and they work with everything else in your closet. I have worn mine with everything from dresses to skirts to pants. Truly a wardrobe staple
4. Mint Cardigan
Award for most worn cardigan last year goes to my mint cardigan! It's such a fun color for all seasons of the year. Looking at the review pictures - it looks like I mostly like pairing it with neutral patterns (black, white or navy) but there was also the occasional outfit using a yellow or green print.
5. Brown Leather Jacket
I purchased a cheap brown faux leather jacket from Forever 21 a few years ago (top right picture with black ruffle blouse) and found myself choosing to wear it much more frequently than my similar style moto F21 faux leather jacket that I already owned. The brown worked better for daytime casual outfits and over dresses because it was less hard/rocker looking. So when I came upon a really great fitting real leather jacket at a small boutique in Atlanta I decided to invest and I'm so glad that I did! With Florida having mild winters this is a great go-to jacket in the morning when it is chilly as I'm leaving the house but it will be 70 degrees by mid-day. It's been a really great investment piece.
->>Row 2:
6. Polka Dot Blouse
I bought this polka dot blouse in March of 2013 because I already had a similar sleeveless polka dot top that I loved and was wearing all the time but I wanted something for work where I could take off cardigan and still have my arms covered. I found this blouse at Forever 21. It's such a fun top and a super great buy as a work wardrobe staple.
7. Light Chambray Shirt
I wore my dark chambray shirt from Old Navy so many times in 2013 that in January I bought another chambray shirt but in a lighter fabric. I ended up wearing it a billion times this year. It just seemed to go with everything. Especially since I started wearing bright and/or patterned bottoms a lot, having a neutral jean for the top of the outfit really balanced out the crazy factor on the bottom of the outfit. And then I read a blog post where Paloma over at Nine Thirty to Five blog mentioned that she had been leery of wearing her chambray shirt to the office but once she did she was totally into it. I felt the same way - the material is basically denim which seems incredibly casual but the actual design of the shirt has buttons and a collar which is actually pretty office appropriate. After dressing my friend up in my chambray shirt with a black pencil skirt, I found that I really like the result! So I've decided, for casual days, I'm joining the wear your chambray to the office train too! :)
8. Navy A-Line Skirt
I really really love this skirt. It's so lovely and feminine but for some reason I forget about it in the back of my closet until I try it on and remember I love it all over again. It's a nice change of silhouette from the standard pencil that I wear so much. When I put it on- it makes me want to dance around my bedroom. Something about the a-line cut feels like a throwback to an old movie - either a 50s Sandy in Grease or maybe Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday. :)
9. Striped Pencil Skirt
This skirt was a impulse buy at Old Navy back in March. I already had a navy polka-dot pencil skirt in my closet so I thought I had my "navy patterned pencil skirt" category covered. But I randomly gabbed it to try on and ended up loving it. Unlike my structured navy pencil skirt - this skirt is soft and stretchy. It's basically like wearing a tube sock. A very cute & flattering tube sock. Because of the soft stretchy fabric it seems a lot more casual to me then my other work pencil skirt. I usually think of pencil skirts as exclusively work-wear so I think the real bonus of this purchase was adding a casual pencil skirt option to my closet.
10. Floral Pencil Skirt
I really like my floral pencil skirt. It has been a really great skirt because the colors do a good job of working for every season depending on the top & accessories. The skirt itself has pretty autumnal colors but when paired with a brighter white top, open toed shoes & silver accessories - I could still fit nicely for summer. And the dark tones are dark enough that I've even paired it with black sweaters, black tights and black boots in winter. Because I love this one so much - I think my next pencil skirt purchase might be a second brighter floral pencil for just spring & summer.
->>Row 3:
11. Black Pants
Black pants. Everyone has them. While none of these outfits are especially creative or crazy it just shows that day in and day out those black work pants are the work horse and absolute foundation of a work wardrobe. They go with everything. You can wear them multiple times a week and nobody notices. They are dark so they hide stains & wear better then other pants. The are the single absolute must have work basic.
12. Hot Pink Dress
I think finding an alternate to the little black dress really gives you a lot of additional wardrobe options. A dress with a color you love and not too many details (details that would pin it to a specific dressiness/event type) allows for the ability to dress it up or down using layers, shoes, scarves and jewelry. I love the vibrant pink color of this dress. I think this dress is wonderfully versatile purchase - I wore it with cute wedges to a baby shower, with fun heels on date night, with jean jacket and flat sandals for a casual look and in Thailand with sandals out to fun rooftop bars. Yay for fun punchy colored dresses that can be worn tons of ways!

13. Green Shirt Dress
In April of 2013 a friend of mine invited me to a CAbi show for clothing at her house and I ended up buying a couple of things from her. (It was my first time going to an event like that.) When I tried to explain to my husband what a 'house show for clothing' is - he wasn't getting how you can buy stuff from the consultant hosting the event until I compared it to Mary Kay or a Tupperware party. So now that it has arrived - he calls this dress my 'Tupperware dress' A shirt dress is such a easy but put-together thing to wear. I'm digging this one a lot so I think I'm going to keep my eye out for another one in a different color to add to my wardrobe.

14. Maxi Dresses (3)
I love a good maxi dress. But looking through this group of photos it looks like like my wearing it 'different ways' really just means I add a cardigan, add a necklace or add a belt. But I love maxi's so much - why ruin a good thing?

Yellow Dress:
I love a pretty print maxi dress as a go-to outfit for hot summer days. I first saw this dress on Audrey from Putting Me Together's blog where she talked about how much she liked all the colors in this dress and options for pairing with colored cardigans & belts she already owns. I totally loved the dress and purchased the same one myself.

It's been a great investment so far this summer. I've worn it to two baby showers, a bbq and in Vegas I wore it all day with a jean jacket and, when my feet didn't want to wear heels on the last night, out to dinner and drinks with the guys at Mandarin Oriental

outfit post: black sweater, grey wool mini skirt, black ankle boots

Inspiration - Reese Witherspoon

My Florida brain finds winter "going out" clothes really difficult to figure out. If the outfit is fun/sexy enough it's usually too cold or if it's warm enough I usually feel too bundled up to be cute. I like this outfit because it is pretty warm (compared to a typical night on the town outfit) yet still sexy/cute.

One thing I miss about living in DC - while I appreciate that we don't have consistently cold weather - we very rarely have any sort of coat check at our nighttime drinking establishments. So that means on cold nights you can either make a dash from your car to the bar and hope for no line or lug your coat around with you all night. Super fun choice. :)

outfit posts maternity: pink drapey cardigan, navy & pink jersey dress, black flats

(39 weeks)
Inspiration - Jennifer Garner

You've may have noticed that there have been less maternity outfit posts lately and that has been for two main reasons - 1) you've seen all my maternity clothes already and 2) I've started getting the super exhausted jet lag feeling I had in my first trimester again. So between work, baby prep & the minimal amount of keeping up with basic life tasks - I just want to take a nap. Photographing outfits hasn't been a priority. (This outfit is identical to outfit #38 in my maternity capsule wardrobe.)

But I'm excited to be healthy and in the home stretch of this pregnancy. I'm excited to meet this little girl and learn how to adjust to life with a new tiny family member. And, after some unknown reasonable amount of figuring stuff out time, I'm also excited to try my best to share with you my journey in dressing myself and my body after baby.

I've gained 55 lbs at this point so there will definitely be some adjusting to a new (and changing) shape with my casual clothing during my 12 weeks of maternity leave. And then once I go back to work - I'll have to tackle getting dressed professionally again. It will be an interesting journey to have to learn to dress a new shape & size body that very well may keep changing on me over the next year. So hopefully I'll be able to share outfits & thoughts on all of that as I go through the transition... stay tuned!

outfit post: print blouse, jean jacket, black pencil skirt, grey suede pumps

Inspiration - J.Crew Factory

Sometimes certain combinations of clothing surprise me and look more like cohesive outfits then other attempts. This outfit is one of them - I really really like it. I've been trying to pin-point what exactly makes me love it so and the main thought that I land on is the (often mentioned) TLC What Not To Wear show formula: Basic Bottom + Printed Top + Completer Piece Jacket = foolproof outfit. I also think I really like the color combination - the bottom & top are both super neutral in black and white and then the jacket adds some color with blue. And for a tiny bit of interest there is the slightly unusual choice (but still neutral) grey shoe.

I really want to improve my ability to analyze outfit components to better convey what I like & thinks works & why that is here on the blog... Any other thoughts on explaining why I like this so much and it seems to 'just work'?

outfit posts: most popular clothing clicks - december

Because I use affiliate links on this site (I get a few cents each time you guys click a shopping link) I am able to see a dashboard of what items were the most clicked on each week/month. I think it's really interesting to see which clothing links you guys are engaged by and click a bunch. And then compare those to which ones you decide to pass over. Here's the most clicked items for December.

outfit post: yellow floral a-line skirt, white button up shirt, nude pumps

Inspiration - StyleCaster

Florida winter weather varies so much that one day we'll have freezing temperatures and the next day will hit the mid-70s. So to celebrate a random warm day in January I thought this cheery yellow a-line skirt outfit would fit the bill. Professional and fun - makes me think of spring.

Award for most worn cardigan last year goes to my mint cardigan!

It's such a fun color for all seasons of the year. Looking at the review pictures - it looks like I mostly like pairing it with neutral patterns (black, white or navy) but there was also the occasional outfit using a yellow or green print.
