outfit posts look for less: week of reese witherspoon

Sometimes I see celebrities wearing outfits that I love but I don't own any of the pieces to re-create the look. So doing an occasional 'look for less' type post is a way for me to share inexpensive shopping finds that you could use to recreate an outfit/look from a celebrity inspiration photo. (Previous 'Look for Less' posts.)

I love Reese Witherspoon & her day to day style sooo much (can I go live in her closet please??)  that I decided to grab photos of her for the past few weeks in October and try to find pieces that were as similar as possible for recreating her looks. I found a bunch of pretty great similar but way less expensive options below. Even if they aren't exactly the same - I think they could be worn to the same event or have the same spirit in some way. Hope you enjoy!

outfit post maternity: black & white print dress, teal cardigan, black flats

(27 Weeks)
Inspiration - Old Navy

My new outfit formula is: maternity dress + cardigan -- basically what I wear to work 4 out of 5 days each week.

Week 27:
Symptoms - Mostly just a sore lower back. Starting to grunt when I have to get up from sitting on the floor. Feel a bit like when you ride in a car/plane without standing for many hours and then try to get up and walk - a little creaky & stiff around the joints. :)

Food - Doctor told me to slow down on carbs & sugar because I'm already few pounds past the suggested total 35 lb weight gain with three months to go. Which isn't awesome news because that is exactly what I want to eat. Carbs covered in sugar. Mmmm carbs... (<-- Homer Simpson voice.)

The only unusual craving I've had (beyond wanting ALL THE CANDY) is for sparkling water with lime. Normally I'm a flat ice water kinda gal and would only drink sparkling if I had no other options and was dying of thirst. Now I could drink sparkling water by the gallon. Weird that my tastes could change that much.

Exercise - My best friend and her co-workers are including me in their weekly fitbit steps challenges. So I'm walking a good 4-5 miles throughout the day. Have done the Tracy Anderson pregnancy DVD a grand total of two times in the four months I've owned it. Oops. Want to try to focus more on getting stronger for the finish line in 3 months!

Clothes - Feel like after sharing the maternity business casual capsule wardrobe - you've seen all the work pregnancy clothes I own & have been wearing over and over again. Although, one new purchase is this $15 Asos dress I'm wearing today. Guess it'll be a few more casual posts in upcoming weeks! :)

Body - Staring to feel very pregnant. Which makes me really start to wonder how in the world my body is going to continue to grow larger for three more months! Eep!

outfit post: white camp shirt, navy pencil skirt, leopard wedges

Inspiration - Fendi via Net-a-Porter

Umm this is a total duplicate outfit. I try to keep track of what inspiration photos I've used to create outfits for the blog but every so often I get a little mixed up and take a photo of an inspiration photo I've already used. In this case I dressed my bookclub friend up in an outfit I wore on the blog back in July when the pencil skirt barely still fit my growing baby bump.

But after thinking about it (and running really low on my saved up pictures of my 'body double' dress up session) I thought that this is such a good classic with a touch of fun type outfit - that I'd share it again. But maybe because it's my clothes on someone else - it's sorta different? :)

outfit post: coral blazer, grey wide-leg pants, pointed toe black pumps

Inspiration - Le Ch√Ęteau

I really really like the simple yet fun combination of the pieces that make up this outfit. This fun bright blazer is a great way to add some color into a basic outfit - and at $25 it's quite a deal. (I bought a medium but would have slightly preferred a large -- and the shipping took for-ever but wasn't too bad considering the cheap-o price.)

The only thing with this outfit is that my (non-pregnant) friend who is substitute modeling  ("body doubling") my clothes in this picture is quite a bit smaller then me - so the fit of the pants is a little big on her. (Here I am wearing the same pants last February and January 2012 with somewhat of a better fit.)

outfit posts: most popular clothing clicks - september & october

Because I use affiliate links on this site (I get a few cents each time you guys click a shopping link) I am able to see a dashboard of what items were the most clicked on each week/month. I think it's really interesting to see which clothing links you guys are engaged by and click a bunch. And then compare those to which ones you decide to pass over. Here's the most clicked items for September & October.

Looks like you've got fall staples on the brain! :)

outfit post: paisley shorts, white cotton peasent blouse, medallion sandals

Inspiration - Lauren Conrad

So the weather here is still really summery during the day. So no reason not to embrace the lingering warmth and post my favorite paisley/medallion shorts one last time. Easy breezy casual cute outfit - all of my favorite things!

outfit post: cap sleeved dot blouse, navy a-line skirt, black wedges

Inspiration - Land's End

I love this skirt but for some reason I forget about it until I try it on and remember I love it all over again. It's a nice change of silhouette from the standard pencil.

outfit post: purple cardigan, black camisole, grey pencil skirt, black wedges

Inspiration - Huaren US via Pinterst

Mid-week outfit slump? Too sleepy to figure out what to wear? My brain always reverts to my simple tried & true formula: basic bottom + basic top + colorful/patterned cardigan = outfit.

(If you're feeling super crazy the formula could also be: basic bottom + patterned/colorful top + basic cardigan = outfit... I know, stop the presses! Ground breaking!)

outfit post: green blouse, black skinny jeans, black wedges

Inspiration - Forever 21

Finally finally finally the weather here in Florida got a tad bit cooler! The last few days have been glorious with lows in 50s and highs in 70s. So lovely to have all the windows in the house open and wear something other then mid-summer fabrics.

I love this outfit because it can really function as a casual work to weekend getup. I could see myself being equally comfortable wearing this on a normal (non-client) workday to talk code/timelines with developers and then leaving work to directly meet up with the girls for bookclub at a cute restaurant.  Yay for multitasking outfits!

I also love this deep emerald/forest/jeweled tone green. Regardless of current trends in color - I will always be a fan of jewel tones on just about everyone. Deep greens, warm burgundies and rich purples are universally flattering, remind me of fall and make me happy.

outfit post: october 2014 fall shopping wishlist

Even though I'm currently trying to limit my shopping to only necessary maternity items - that doesn't mean I can't go window/online wishlist shopping for all the cute fall fashions. The items above are are all great fall closet staples that I would be currently in the market for if I wasn't temporarily shaped like humpty dumpty. :)

Versatile fall dress
  • I love a heavier material jeweled toned dress for fall. So many cute ways to wear it. Blazer and pumps for work, cozy cardigan, tights and booties for movie night with your guy or over a chambray shirt with flats for brunch with the girls. Love.

Patterned Chambray Shirt
  • I've worn my dark and light chambray shirts to death. They seem to magically go with everything. I love the idea of another one with a slight pattern (polka-dots!) to my closet. I would love to layer one under sweaters or wear it along with skinny jeans & booties.

Plaid Scarf
  • I love how much a scarf can add interest & complete a basic outfit. The scarf pictured above from Target has been popping up on every single blog I read. Super cute plaid. And there are a zillion other options that are just as cute.

Booties
  • I struggle a bit with booties. It has taken me a bunch of tries to find the right pair that don't make my legs look stumpy. But once you do find a pair that work for you shape - I think they are super cute and stylish.

Sweater Dress
  • I love love love a good sweater dress. Giant cozy sack that hides Halloween/Thanksgiving over indulging while still being stylish? Sign me up.

Black Skinny Jeans
  • I have an old pair of black skinny jeans from Target that I have worn to death. Need to replace my pair. (I don't know why but I prefer wearing skinny jeans to leggings.) Great in fall for tunic shirts, sweaters layered with button ups and tanks with cozy flowy cardigans. Cute with riding boots, ankle boot or flats.

Cable Knit Sweater
  • Love a really soft pretty ivory cable knit sweater. It's the fall/winter equivalent of the t-shirt. You can throw it on all the time with everything.

Tweed Pencil Skirt
  • I have a pink tweed pencil skirt that I love but being that it's pink - I don't feel like I can wear it all the time because it's a little too distinctive. I'd love to find a deep burgundy, brown or other jeweled tone skirt that could be worn weekly during fall/winter.

Open Drapey Cardigan
  • I love a cozy cardigan for fall. Florida temperatures can swing 20-30 degrees from morning commute to lunch break and an easy layer like a cardigan is great for adjusting to the swinging temps.

starter business casual capsule wardrobe checklist

This checklist is a good template for a basic starter work wardrobe. (Even though I created this for my maternity capsule wardrobe it works just as well for anyone with regard to mixing & matching.) I had a few requests to update the header on this checklist so people could pin it as a starter capsule wardrobe without looking like they were expecting - so here's the updated graphic. :)

For previous checklists I've put together: click here

Here's how I put together my starter business capsule wardrobe -

The method:
  1. Basics - First step was putting together the basics pieces to lay the foundation for the wardrobe. I tried to choose very basic, very re-wearable clothes. Clothes that I knew I would be wearing over and over so they would need to be simple enough that they coordinated with everything else in the capsule and I didn't get bored if I wore them multiple times a week for weeks on end.

For the basics in this capsule wardrobe I chose two pairs of  pants (bootcut & ankle), two simple tanks, a pencil skirt and a simple black suit jacket.

  • Interest - Second, I added interesting pieces to compliment the subtle basics in a mix of styles. I looked for pops of color or fun patterns or even texture that would make the basic pieces more exciting. I tried to grab items that will compliment each other or at least be somewhat in the same color scheme. For this capsule I tried to stick to pinks, purples & teals in what I hoped were sophisticated prints.

For this set of interest pieces I picked three dresses, a striped skirt, three cardigans and three fun blouses.

  • Accessories & Shoes - Finally, I added some accessories to complete the outfits. Jewelry, belts and scarves can dramatically alter how an outfit looks. For shoes in this capsule I just went easy and chose my super comfortable black wedges.

For this capsule wardrobe I chose three necklaces, one scarf and one gold watch.  For shoes I picked a basic pair of black wedges.

  •  Hope you enjoyed!
