outfit post: navy blouse, striped jersey pencil skirt, brown peep toed pumps

Inspiration - Kelly Ripa

Phewww. After 20 hours of travel Saturday and another 20 hours of sleeping Sunday I'm slowly starting to turn back into a normal human being again. I really love the opportunity I get to travel to cool places and work with interesting people but after a week of all day workshops, morning & night team meals and extended hours of coworker bonding -- my introvert social batteries get completely depleted. Looking forward to a week of low social interaction and lots of extra catch-up sleep!

This skirt was a recent impulse buy at Old Navy. I think this type of striped pencil skirt has been a trend for a few years now but because I already have a navy polka-dot skirt I thought I had my "navy patterned pencil skirt" category covered in my closet. I just randomly gabbed it to try on and ended up loving it. Unlike my structured navy pencil skirt - this skirt is soft and stretchy. It's basically like wearing a tube sock. A very cute & flattering tube sock. Because of the soft stretchy fabric it seems a lot more casual to me then my other skirt - so I think this will be fun to wear in hot summer months with sandals.

outfit post: beige flutter sleeve blouse, black editor pants, black patent wedges, gold belt

Inspiration -

Ok - while I didn't wear a tie neck blouse for a third day straight - I managed to have on in my inspiration photo. Hee hee. I decree this the official week of the tie neck blouses at Outfit Posts! I'm loving the combination of beige blouse with the gold belt. Will definitely need to find more ways to combine those elements in other outfits.

I also decree myself incredibly silly & have the need for a lot of catch-up sleep. Why do work trips always end up with me averaging around 4 hours of sleep? Blerrgg. Brain. Is. Dead.

outfit post: polka-dot tie neck blouse, navy pencil skirt, burgundy heels

Inspiration - J.Crew

Yay for day two of tie neck blouses! I love this look.

As I was putting this post together I got a nagging feeling that the outfit & inspiration were familiar. Poked around in the blog flipcard view and saw that I have already used this inspiration for an almost identical outfit back in October 2012. Whoopsie.

Although that's a long time ago and it was a different skirt & shoes... so this is sorta new? Showing repeats is definitely more realistic to what I actually wear - but I think that would mostly be boring to see the same things over & over. So the days that the blog has any other kind of post then an actual outfit are usually days that I'm repeating wearing something in real life that has already been posted.

(We had SUNSHINE all day yesterday here in Ireland! I was beautiful. Too bad I was stuck in conference rooms and didn't get to properly enjoy it.)

outfit post: pink tie front blouse, grey pencil skirt, black pointed toe heels

Inspiration - Pinterest
(Can't seems to find original source with image search.)

Tie neck blouses might be my favorite type work shirt. They are so easy to wear with any pants, skirt, cardigan or jacket and I feel like they take "clothing put on together" and turn it into "an outfit". Very much the same way putting on the right jewelry or a good jacket can do. And when you wear them you don't need to think about necklaces or interesting earrings because there is fun detail in the blouse. Yay for less thinking in the morning.

(Will try to upload some of my pictures from my work trip to Ireland so far. It's going great. So far this week we're getting a bit of good weather mixed with rain. Pretty typical I imagine.)

outfit post: white blouse, mustard/green cardigan, navy pencil skirt, black pointed toe heels

Inspiration - Nine-Thirty to Five

Nine-Thirty to Five is one of my new favorite blogs. It's two attorney friends who take pictures of what they wore to the office. Super cute outfits that I can make with clothes already in my closet! I just pinned about a thousand outfits as inspiration.

I love this outfit. This greenish-yellowish cardigan might be my all time favorite cardigan. (And as a cardigan addict that is a really difficult choice to make.) Plus it's all the elements of my favorite work uniform: basic bottom, top with interest plus a fun cardigan. Yay!

outfit posts: most popular clothing clicks - march

Because I use affiliate links on this site (I get a few cents each time you guys click a shopping link) I am able to see a dashboard of what items were the most clicked on each week. I think it's really interesting to see which clothing links you guys are engaged by and click a bunch. And then compare those to which ones you decide to pass over. Here's the most clicked items from the beginning of March. :)

outfit post: coral/peach crepe blouse, bootcut jeans, wedges

Inspiration - Zoe Saldana

I liked the mixing of a orange/red blouse with a red purse in Zoe's outfit. I tried to do something similar by wearing my peachy/coral blouse with a red necklace. For some reason my first instinct when adding accessories is that they should match exactly or be complimentary colors to the clothes. But I really like changing it up & the result of the analogous colors.

outfit post: black & white patterned crepe shift dress, jean jacket, red ballet flats

Inspiration - Reese Witherspoon

Just a heads up - posting might be a little sporadic over the next week. The project that took me to Germany in February is now in phase two and our team is meeting next week in Ireland. And when I travel internationally I never quite know my work schedule & internet availability to be able to blog.

I love my job and the opportunity it gives me to travel to cool places and meet interesting people. But the trade-off to so much time away is I often feel like I am not quite caught up on my life. I think everyone feels how life can pull you in different and competing directions. Wanting to do well at all areas of your life but the opportunity cost are that if you choose to spend time doing one thing that means you aren't doing something else. More time with family & friends might mean messy house. Or extra time for One Suitcase post means skipping the gym. Long day at work could mean take out for dinner.

For some reason when I travel it makes me more aware of where I make those choices once I'm home. But the way I look at it - you just do the best you can. Make the best choices you are able to with the information you have and then let the rest fall where it may. :)

one suitcase: spring capsule wardrobe

Post 8/8 -
Between my job & my love of seeing new places around the world I spend a fair amount of time living out of a suitcase. From all the experience I have gained from hauling myself & my stuff all over the place I have learned just how valuable packing smart & packing light is to your sanity. And I think I have gotten pretty good at selecting just my few favorite pieces of clothing to bring and stretching their use though multiple outfits for multiple activities as I travel.

This philosophy of looking at a limited number of clothing items and seeing beyond the obvious combinations can be applied to a normal wardrobe. I have learned through trial and error that by picking a few favorite & versatile pieces of clothing I can mix and match the items into a surprising number of outfit options. You just have to do a little planning up front. Hopefully the posts this week will show you my method and help you find the potential of the clothes you already have in your closet!

In case you missed - it the previous posts in the series can be found here:
Here is a checklist graphic that could be helpful for either shopping or traveling:

And finally, here's how I put together my spring capsule wardrobe-

The method:
  1. Basics - First I pick some basics pieces to lay the foundation for the capsule wardrobe. I try to pick my favorite go-to clothes. Clothes I know I wear over and over. The ones that go with almost everything. For me, this usually involves laying out favorite pair of jeans and favorite white blouse.

The basics in this capsule wardrobe I have chosen are a chambray shirt, jean jacket, grey cardigan, navy sleeveless blouse, white-t, skinny jeans and a simple white dress.

Interest - Second, I add a few interesting pieces to compliment the subtle basics. I look for pops of color or fun patterns or even texture that will make the basic pieces more exciting. I try to grab items that will compliment each other or at least be somewhat in the same color scheme. For this capsule I tried to stick to whites, yellows & minty greens in what I felt were fun spring prints.

For this set of interest pieces I picked a cognac jacket, mint cardigan, mustard yellow pencil skirt, printed pant, striped skirt, striped shirt, printed maxi dress and floral blouse.

Accessories & Shoes - Finally, I add some accessories to complete the outfits. Jewelry, belts and scarves can dramatically alter how an outfit looks. Unfortunately, shoes is the area I still struggle with. I always want to bring just one more pair. But I've learned to limit myself to only either blacks or browns (depending on my clothes) and then nude/beige shoes go with everything.

For this capsule wardrobe I chose four necklaces, one gold bracelet, scarf and two belts.  For shoes I added two pairs of pumps, a bright pair of flats and leopard sandals.

Hope you enjoyed it!!
