outfit post: green striped button down, green sweater, grey work pants, black flats

Where I wore this - Minnesota client workshop Day 4 & travel home

Post 5/6 - This was the last outfit I wore on Friday for client workshops in Minnesota. The undershirt plus button down plus cashmere sweater kept me nice and toasty - along with the "warm" 30 degree weather that finally arrived. Lesson learned - layers are key.

We had a short day of configuration discussion and after lunch my co-worker and I headed to the airport to fly back to Florida. Since this outfit is reasonably comfortable - I wore it home on the plane. Easier then digging around in my suitcase in the airport bathroom for a specific travel outfit.

Glad to be home again with the hubs & our little furry friends. This week home has been a pretty busy whirlwind week. Lots of work and catch up on life. And then next up on the agenda, I leave for Germany on Monday for two weeks for another project! Exciting!!

Going to try to write some scheduled posts this weekend to come out while I travel and then I will recap my packing list when I get back! :)

Where I wore this - Minnesota client workshop Day 3

Post - 4/6 - This outfit is basically a combination of the bottom half of day 1's outfit and the top half of day 2's with a sweater swap.

Where I wore this - Minnesota client workshop Day 2

Post 3/6 - Here's what I wore the second day of Minnesota Polar Vortex configuration workshops. Again I went with layering to stay warm. White thermal undershirt, white button down, black sweater and fun leopard belt. On the bottom I wore fleece tights, wool socks, wool pants and black flats.

Occasionally the tops of my feet would show between my pants and my pants and you would see my furry socks which looked a little weird. Not necessarily the best winter shoes. But with the socks & tights they worked well enough for my short battles with outdoor conditions. I don't think they would have been practical choices for any sort of extended walking outside but were fine for my quick runs to and from the car.

Where I wore this - Minnesota Client Workshop Day 1

Post 2/6 - First day onsite in Minnesota. High of 3°. Oh man. My strategy was layering. I wore a black thermal undershirt, under a really warm teal sweater and topped those with my suit jacket. On the bottom I put on my pencil skirt, fleece tights, wool socks and boots. I originally thought I'd switch to heels at the office but my feet were so happy in the socks & boots (and everyone else was wearing boots too) that I just decided to stick with warmth.

This was all topped with my winter coat, scarf and knit hat (covered my ears versus the cloche hat which didn't) for my dash from the hotel to the car and from the car to the front door of the office. I was really lucky that I didn't have to spend more then a minute or so outside each day getting to and from the car.

This outfit ended up being fine for inside. I thought I'd be too hot and have to undo layers. But I was actually nice and comfy all day. (This outfit is so similar to Monday's suit post I'm going to post a second outfit today.)

Where I wore this: Travel Day to Polar Vortex Minnesota

Post 1/6 - Here's what I wore on the plane to fly from Florida to Minnesota for a four day business trip. The temperatures were forecast to be frigid (one day was low of -20°F with high of -3°F!) for most of the week I would be there. I wasn't entirely sure what to pack. I knew I could bundle up to survive outside for a little bit but once bundled I didn't want to die of heatstroke inside the office. I wasn't sure what would be a reasonable layering balance.

Over the next few days I'll show you what I wore and try to share what I thought worked/didn't work. And at the end of the week I'll put together a packing checklist in case you'd find that useful.

Now that I'm home with a high of 73°F today - I have to say kudos to you guys who deal with these temperatures on a regular basis!

(Picture below is what I carry at the airport. I did two previous posts - one about what I bring in my carry-on tote (over my shoulder) and another my method for packing for business trip.)

outfit post: navy colorblock sheath, navy two-button jacket, black pointed toe pumps

    Inspiration - Hobbs UK

Made it home safe & sound from Minnesota! Survived my first -20° experience! Going to start recapping the cold weather office outfits I wore tomorrow. (Hint: layers layers layers!)

This suit is an recent investment which brings my suit count up to three. I bought a black one from Anne Taylor my second year in college (14 years ago - phew!) and then a grey one a few years into working. (Although the jacket to the grey one has gone missing around two years ago on one of my work trips. Grr.) I always wear a suit the first day on site with a client and then rotate the pieces as separates into outfits during the week I'm there. (And into my wardrobe the rest of time also.) So finally I decide to bite the bullet and invest in a third one.

I bought all four of the pieces - the jacket, skirt, trousers and sheath dress. (Tried the straight legged pants first and the cut didn't look good on my body at all. But the trouser cut was cute.)

outfit post: canvas slub sweater, rockstar skinny jeans, red ballet flats

    Inspiration - Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift has been quite the inspiration the past two weeks. Today, last week's work look and last weekend's skinny jean outfit.

I have been wearing these Old Navy Rockstar jeans quite a bit and I have been pretty happy with them. Only drawback is that even though I washed them before I wore them - if I put my hands in my pockets/touch the jeans a lot throughout the day - I've noticed my hands turning a slight shade of dyed blue. Not a good look.

I guess I'll try washing them again in hot and see if that'll rinse out any remaining dye...

outfit post: black shirt dress, red cardigan, black pumps

    Inspiration - Jennifer Garner

    Happy Friday y'all.

Yesterday I took a New York Times quiz about regional dialects and it correctly (close enough) pinpointed me to Tampa, Florida. During a workshop break a few of the client's team took the quiz and they were pinpointed correctly to cities like Boston, St Paul/Minneapolis and Michigan. The questions are pretty funny.

    Things like:
    • What do you call the rubber-soled shoes worn in gym class or for athletic activities? (Sneakers? Tennis Shoes? Trainers?)
    • What do you call the thing from which you might drink water in a school? (Water fountain? Drinking Fountain? Bubbler?)
    • What do you call it when rain falls while the sun is shining? (Sunshower? Monkey's Wedding? <---What?)
    • What do you call a traffic jam caused by drivers slowing down to look at an accident or other diversion on the side of the road? (Rubbernecking? LookieLou? Gaper's Delay?)
Some answers I thought were really obviously universal - some of the MN people had never heard of... like rubbernecking! We had fun comparing vocabularies for a bunch of stuff. If you take the quiz - do you get the right region?

outfit post: argyle sweater, black editor pants, navy lady day coat, black pointed toe pumps

    Inspiration - Michelle Obama

Love argyle sweaters soooo much. I especially like how this outfit is mostly serious colors black & navy but then has the fun cheery splash of print in the sweater. I am very easily pleased.

outfit post: pinstripe button down shirt, navy pencil skirt, black pointed toe pumps

    Inspiration - Victoria's Secret

This is what I call in my head my 'sexy secretary' look. Very simple elements - button down blouse, navy pencil skirt, black pumps and simple gold jewelry - nothing tight or short. But somehow put together I feel both professionally appropriate and very, er, womanly. :)

outfit post: striped shirt, black pencil skirt, pointy toe black pumps

    Inspiration - Taylor Swift

This is a pretty loose interpretation of the inspiration outfit. This outfit is actually the case where I put on the outfit and took a picture first and then had to work backwards to find an image to use as an inspiration photo for the blog. Little bit of googling "striped shirt black skirt tights" found the Taylor Swift image above. Works for me!

I really like this outfit. I feel sleek, sophisticated and a little bad-ass. :)

outfit post: grey cloche hat, navy lady day coat, grey plaid scarf, black riding boots

    Inspiration - Blair Waldorf

As I started packing for Minnesota I realized I was lacking some basic winter gear - hat and gloves.  Back to the mall again for second weekend in a row. Found cute grey cloche hat (the angle of this picture it almost looks like a fedora but it's more bucket shaped), grey plaid scarf and gloves on super sale at Dillard's. Score.

I am going to queue up some posts for this week while I'm traveling because my schedule can be really unpredictable when I'm onsite with clients. But I will post what I packed for super cold weather work outfits next week when I get back.

(Congrats to the 3 winners of the gift card giveaway! I will email you today to let you know you won & get your addresses!)

    Inspiration - Hello, Gorgeous!

I thought that my mint jeans were going to be shelved for spring until I saw this cute outfit Yasi put together using mint, stripes & boots. Love it! It feels fresh and bright and yet still wintery to me. Fun. Happy Friday everyone!
