outfit post: old navy shopping spree!

After lots of work-work-work go-go-go lately - I was surprised & excited when I won an award at work last Friday!

It seems like there just aren't that many awards to be won in grown-up work life (other then salary raises/promotions) so it was pretty fun to win & be recognized for my effort. It's a new program at my company where if you get one of these awards you get mentioned in a company wide email (my company is huuuuge) and you get go to this internal website and pick out a gift card with some dollar value as your prize. Yay fun!

So I went and cashed mine in and got an Old Navy gift card for $100. Woo-hoo! So then on Monday I went to the store and I found a bunch of good stuff! (If you're interested - you can see the full list, links & prices here of what I purchased.) Sometimes I love everything at Old Navy and others I can't find a single thing. This trip I found a bunch of cute stuff.

I put together the outfits below with everything I bought except the blue eyelet dress & the pink boat shoes because they were out of my size but I was able to order them and they are on their way.

Randomly, all of these outfits kind of look like I'm headed to the same summery place. Not intentional but fun that it worked out that way! :)

Inspiration - Lilly Pulitzer

Think this is such a fun pretty dress! I'm in love. Very beach resort or baby shower. Think it'll be fun to pull colors of the pattern out with cardigans like mint, navy & pink. Love.

Inspiration - J.Crew

Yay for stripes. Feel like I should be getting on a sailboat. Basically my favorite. And who doesn't love wearing clothes that feel like PJs and still looking cute?

Inspiration - Scott Disick

I think this outfit is fun because it's so preppy. Pink AND plaid. Scott Disick was the only inspiration photo that was even remotely similar to these clothes that I could find. Boy as inspiration - no problem!

(New purchases: Pink shirt, plaid shorts and canvas sneakers.)

Inspiration - Alessandra Ambrosio

I'm always in the market for good basics. I wanted plain dark wash longer jeans that I could wear with heels. These fit the bill.

outfit post: blue plaid shirt, mustard green cardigan, black pencil skirt

      Inspiration - Dainty & Decadent

Yay for fun inspiration photos! I feel like the fashion/outfit/clothing blogs I read fall into one of two categories. The first type are aspirational and remind me of fashion magazines with super expensive clothes and artistic modeling photoshoots. These blogs are fun to dream about and inspire the artistic side of fashion.

And the second type are equally fun but are the ones that actually really help me get dressed in the morning. They have cute outfits I could actually make from clothes I own and I wouldn't look like a high-fashion off the runway weirdo if I wore them in my everyday life. Maria at Dainty & Decadent is one of my absolute favorite outfit bloggers. (She's currently blogging adorable maternity wear!) I get so much inspiration from reading her blog. I like her fun use of color & print and her attention to clothing cut & fit. And just her really great ability to put together good outfits.

Her blog is where today's inspiration came from. I love plaid as a base pattern for a fun colored cardigan. Wouldn't have thought of this on my own. Too cute.

outfit post: polka-dot blouse, black pencil skirt

More of my new favorite Forever 21 shirt! Hope you're not sick of it - because I have like ten more outfits I want to try with it. :)

I'm really liking just wearing black and white. I like the restraint of staying achromatic and not adding a big pop of a saturated color like I typically do. Makes me feel more sophisticated then normal. Fun to try something different!

outfit post: grey ruffle jacket, black 'editor' pants, black boatneck shirt

      Inspiration - Michael Kors

I've been doing a little spring cleaning and going through my closet and clothing. So today's outfit was my trying to force myself to utilize something that typically lives a lonely, unworn life in the back of my closet. (And if I can't figure out a way to wear it then I need to admit it's time to pass the piece of clothing on.)

This is only the second time I've worn this jacket in the many years I've owned it. It was one of those super sale rack finds at Loft where it was like $12 marked down from over a hundred. I thought to myself - what a great deal! I'd better buy this right now! Instead of posing a more appropriate question - do you ever wear blazers unless you have to? (Answer - no.) I think blazers look so crisp and nice on but given the choice I always find myself drawn to cardigans. While this isn't my favorite outfit of all time - I like it enough to wear it again and I think this jacket will get to stay. :)

      one suitcase: mini-getaway capsule wardrobe

All this working lately is making me dream of a little escape vacation! While I was pretending I had plans of traveling - I put together a mini-set of outfits for a short trip. (I got the combination ideas from this outfit set from Banana Republic.) At least I got a mental break! Hope you enjoy!!

      The method:
      • Basics - First I pick some basics pieces to lay the foundation for the trip. I try to pick my favorite go-to clothes. Clothes I know I wear over and over. The ones that go with almost everything. For me, this usually involves laying out jeans, favorite shirts and a pair of super comfy wedges.

For the basics in this capsule wardrobe I chose a light knit cardigan, white jeans, navy blazer and a white crepe blouse.

      • Interest - Second, I add a few interesting pieces to compliment the subtle basics. I look for pops of color or fun patterns or even texture that will make the basic pieces more exciting. I try to grab items that will compliment each other or at least be somewhat in the same color scheme.

For this capsule wardrobe I chose a chevron dress, pink shorts and a teal patterned blouse.

      • Accessories & Shoes - Finally, I add some accessories to complete the outfits. Jewelry, belts and scarves take up very little room and can dramatically alter how an outfit looks. Unfortunately, shoes is the area I still struggle with. I always want to bring just one more pair. But I've learned to limit myself to only either blacks or browns (depending on my clothes) and then nude/beige shoes go with everything.

For this capsule wardrobe I chose two necklaces, one gold watch and two belts (not shown).  For shoes I packed wedges and sandals.

      • The Result - Here are the 9 outfits I put together from the 7 pieces of clothing!
      • The outfits! - Here's an outfit by outfit run down piece by piece.

*These 'one suitcase' posts don't include personal items, makeup, undergarments, etc - I think there are many, very comprehensive lists like that on the internet that would do a better job then I would.
**My bag is totally tattered & stained. I've had it for over ten years. Sorry if it's gross! :)
