guest outfit post - sister week: blue jumpsuit

Inspiration - Lauren Conrad

My wonderful little sister agreed to do another guest poster sister stint! She has done three guest weeks before and each time I love seeing what she comes up with. I think her style is really fun, young and trendy. I hope you enjoy her looks over the next few weeks!

Jumpsuits are a little intimidating. I have long legs and if the legs of a jumpsuit are too short it looks silly. My shorter friends complain because things are always too long on them. At least you have the option to hem when you are shorter. With long legs, you just can't buy it. So anyway, the length was good and I have seen a lot of jumpsuits around lately and decided to go for it. I found this one for 70% off. I tend to spend a lot less on trendier items as they are not pieces that you keep in your closet for a long period of time. I like the heel in this picture, but if I were to wear this out I would probably swap the heel for a fancy flat.

I bought this dress on super sale from Urban Outfitters awhile back. It is perfect for the summer but can also be worn to holiday parties and in the winter with a coat thrown over and some tights. I love lace and all things girly. The sweetheart neckline just adds to the girly feel.

guest outfit post - sister week: blue lace overlay dress

Inspiration - Revolve

This dress was a gift from my boyfriend's sister. I wore it to a dinner and got so many compliments on it and "where did you get that from?" Sadly, I told them I didn't know. But the brand is Lush so I assume it is from a boutique or retailer that carries Lush. The lace applique seems to be a big trend (I think there's an actual name for it other than lace applique) so I feel super trendy when I wear this. It would be perfect for New Years Eve or a Holiday cocktail party. It is a little scandalous so I would skip wearing it to a family party and save it for a friends party.

guest outfit post - sister week: black long sleeved skater dress

Inspiration - French Connection

Another random Forever21 find. I had grabbed a ton of clothes to try on and was leaving the fitting room when I saw this dress haphazardly poking out of a rack with $9 displayed on the top. I picked it up. No way this dress would fit right. Nine dollars? The reject rack? Someone must have thought the same thing because it was poking out and left out to dry. Lucky me they were wrong. I swiped it, tried on, and boom. Fit like a glove. I didn't have to dance around in it. I didn't have to tug it or take my hair out of my ponytail, put it back in the ponytail and take it out again to know that I liked this dress. I tell myself to remember never to buy those things that you try on and do not immediately want to do a little dance or say "eeeeeeeeee" in your head. Sometimes I do that not in my head.

So, this is definitely a fancy shmancy but pretty scandy dress so appropriate places to wear would include New Years, night on the town or... yeah maybe that's it. But for $9 those two events would be like $4.50 per event.

guest outfit post - sister week: grey sweater, white button down, black skinny jeans, black ankle boots

Inspiration - Da Fashionista

I love layering button downs and sweaters together when it gets chilly. I feel so sophisticated and preppy. In the inspo picture she is wearing a skirt and tights but I chose black skinnies instead. Mostly because I don't own a skirt that looks right under the sweater and button down. My sister was kind enough to let me borrow her booties. Black booties are a great item to own during winter. They pair well with jeans as well as tights and skirts or tights and dresses. It's hard for me to break down and invest because it's only cold where we live for a few months out of the year. But I guess booties could be worn in the warmer months with light weight dresses. So, to do: find booties at reasonable price. I would steal my sisters (don't read this tehe) but we are one shoe size apart and my toes are a little squishy in them.

guest outfit post - sister week: half-placket emerald green dress, orchid skinny belt, bow sandals

Inspiration - Never Fully Dressed

My wonderful little sister agreed to do another guest poster sister stint! She has done three guest weeks before and each time I love seeing what she comes up with. I think her style is really fun, young and trendy. I hope you enjoy her looks over the next few weeks!

I was visiting my boyfriend for the holidays and got the chance to go to a J.Crew store for some Christmas shopping for my fam... but let's be real. 70% off- I'm getting some goods for me. This dress was originally like $160 but I bought it on the sale rack for $25. Sometimes you just can't pass up a deal. Even when your meager college budget means you will have to eat tuna and eggs for a few days. This green dress-worth it. I also snagged this necklace and belt. The necklace can be worn to holiday parties or with simple things like a chambray shirt and black jeans. It's great for adding a little funk to more plain pieces.

The belt color I love. My sister informed me she read it's this coming seasons hot color. Go me for finding it for $5 at J.Crew. The shoes are Tory Burch sandals that my boyfriend gave as a present, so those were not so cheap, but luckily this outfit pretty much works with any shoe. A heel, flat, nicer sandal would all look great.

Pantone declared 2014 color of the year as Radiant Orchid:
And here is their 2014 Spring color pallet:

From Wikipedia: Pantone Inc. is a corporation headquartered in Carlstadt, New Jersey. The company is best known for its Pantone Matching System, a proprietary color space used in a variety of industries, including Fashion.

Annually Pantone declares a particular color "Color of the Year". Twice a year the company hosts, in a European capital, a secret meeting of representatives from various nations' color standards groups. After two days of presentations and debate, they choose a color for the following year; for example, the color for summer 2013 was chosen in London in the spring of 2012. The color purportedly connects with the zeitgeist; for example the press release declaring Honeysuckle the color of 2011 said "In times of stress, we need something to lift our spirits. Honeysuckle is a captivating, stimulating color that gets the adrenaline going – perfect to ward off the blues." The results of the meeting are published in Pantone View, which fashion designers, florists, and many other consumer-oriented companies purchase to help guide their designs and planning for future products.

guest outfit post - sister week: grey slouchy cardigan, green tank, black skinny jeans, ankle boots

This outfit says, "I'm a celeb (probably in the airport) pretending like I didn't try to look cute and put together, but oops I look cute and put together... oh are those paparazzi? Didn't know they'd be here (right.)" For those of us who aren't celebs- this outfit is a great casual outfit when you want to look a little more put together in a place that isn't the most glamorous place.

guest outfit post - sister week: red plaid shirt, green sweater, black skinny jean, burgundy pumps

Inspiration - Extra Petite

This outfit started with the sweater. I am a huge bargain shopper and refuse to sacrifice quality and style for lack of a budget. Browsing Forever21 can be overwhelming with the crazy amount of clothes piled into one huge white block of a store, but I happened upon this sweater and could not be more excited. It was christmas-y, included a necklace already sewn to the sweater (bonus!) and had a great fit that felt like it was not made at Forever21. Ironically, the best finds at Forever21 are the items that look that you got them from any store other than Forever21.

Anyway, back on track. The sweater. Great. What goes best with forest green during the holidays? Red. Red flannel. Boom. Black skinnies and plum heels/purse worked great, but the top part of the outfit is what rocks. Pair it with a high waisted leather skater skirt (foreshadowing outfits to come?), regular jeans, boyfriend jeans, the list goes on.

Where would I wear this outfit? A holiday party, visiting relatives, holiday shopping or something more low key with flats instead of the heels.

outfit post: black dress, wide brown belt, riding boots

Hmm. I felt really cute wearing this outfit on Friday to get started on finish my Christmas shopping. The weather was nice - cool but not cold - and so I thought the boots & dress combo was great. Really like the mixing of brown with black.

But looking at this photo now, I'm not loving how short this dress gets when it's belted. I didn't feel like I showed anyone my underwear while I was wearing it but now I'm definitely questioning that certainty. Oh well, if I did, you win some, you flash some. :/

outfit post:: jean jacket, black shirt, grey tailored ankle pants, red ballet flats

    Inspiration - Jessica Alba

Easy outfit for working from home & some errands. I like the basic neutral pieces mixed with a pop of fun color in the shoes.

Day was going great until I was sidelined by major sneezing attack. So bad I ended up on the couch with tissues plugging my nose instead of at book club ornament exchange with the girls. Boo. Rather - ahhh-choooo!

outfit post: striped sweater, blue button down, grey editor pants, brown loafer heels

    Inspiration - Real Simple

As I was digging through my winter sweater box - I found this really old sweater. At first I was considering donating it because I think the length of it is a little short on my torso. But before I got around to it - I stumbled on this inspiration picture in my Pinterest feed. The button down shirt layering with a sweater both looks cute AND solves the functional problem of the sweater length. Double score!

I've had a few questions since my thanksgiving outfit post about layering sweaters and things getting bunchy. I think sometimes it works fine if the under shirt is pretty fitted and the material of the outer sweater is on the heavier side. When that is not the case and the outer sweater is thinner - I found this great tip of layering a tank as the middle layer from Fran on her blog. She has great demo pictures if you click through.
