outfit post: blue and white striped dress

  Inspiration - Ann Taylor Loft

I love a great little summer dress. It's hot out and you just want to wear something easy, simple and cool without looking like a complete mess. Enter the fun colorful dress. It meets every criteria - one piece of clothing, keeps you ventilated & cool and you look fun & girlie & cute - what could be easier?

I like this dress from Loft because it has a forgiving comfortable fit, love the blue and white stripes and the length is great. (I can't even count how many dresses from other stores that I think I love from the hanger and then when I try them on they are ridiculously short! Pet peeve!)

outfit post: mint sweater, plaid shirt, white jeans

Inspiration - Really Petite

Today's outfit is an exercise in layering. Putting a patterned shirt under a light sweater gives the outfit a little interest and then layering a necklace on top of it all gives it a shiny fun pop. Simple white jeans and nude flats let the top of the outfit keep your attention.

outfit post: awning skirt, coal top, white cardigan

Inspiration - La Vie Petite

I read a really cute mom fashion blogger La Vie Petite. She has worn the most adorable self-made  striped skirt she calls The Awning Skirt in quite a few of her outfits posts. A few times she has even sewn and given one away. Recently she announced that she has opened her own online store to sell the the skirt in three colors. The site is called CoriLynn.

While I'm not normally one to spend $115 on a skirt - I decided to take the plunge and buy one! I rationalized that because it's a super classic design I will be able to wear it forever. And I really like the idea of supporting someone starting out on their own creative venture. And I love it sooo much!

outfit post: high-waisted shorts, navy blouse, black pumps

Inspiration - Lauren Conrad

I definitely need a new infusion of ideas for what to wear for a night out on the town. I have a few go-to dresses and one black top I wear with jeans but I need to branch out to some more interesting and current outfit ideas.

Lauren Conrad is always so cute and up-to-date with what she wears so I thought she was a perfect person to copy to try to find a different night out look. Shorts with heels is new fashion territory for me. I've always felt they are primarily casual wear but because of the material and style the shorts in this outfit feel dressy and sophisticated. To balance the look of so much exposed leg I needed to pair it with a top that has more coverage. (As a general rule I try to keep top covered if I'm exposing a lot of leg and vice-versa.)

Top:
Navy silky blouse - Ann Taylor (similar, similar, similar, similar)
Bottom:

Shoes:
Black patent pumps - Mossimo from Target (similar, cute patent cap toe,  similar with slightly lower heel)

outfit post: teal embroidered tank, white jeans, flip flops

Today's look is a recent tank top purchase from Old Navy. I love the embroidered floral detail that makes a basic bright tank top more interesting. I'd wear this outfit to go to a festival (maybe wear regular jeans because I tend to spill/get dirt on anything white) or to go shopping at a farmers market. Perfect casual summer fun outfit.

outfit post: white t, grey pencil skirt, teal necklace

This outfit is me trying to branch out of only wearing my pencil skirts to work. They are a flattering shape and I feel like I should try to wear them in more situations then the office. I like that this outfit has basic components - a simple white-t and my favorite suit skirt put together with a bright fun necklace. I like the result.

Now the only question is where I would wear this outfit? It's too casual for work but too dressy for errands. Definitely a day outfit... sometimes I wish I worked in a more creative & causally dressing industry so I could have reasons to wear an outfit like this.

outfit post: tribal teal shorts, cobalt blue top, patterned belt

Inspiration - Ann Taylor Loft

I have been loving Ann Taylor Loft this spring. Between my 6 month shopping hiatus (because of so much work travel) as well as all their bright new colors, fun prints, cute ads and weekly sales  - I've picked up quite a few new pieces over the past few weeks - and all for really great prices!

I bought this shirt a long time ago, belt two weeks ago and then the shorts two days ago - each individually before seeing the above advertisement on their website. What a great combination! I never would have known that you could put a printed belt with tribal shorts but I think it looks great! And I would have probably worn a white shirt with the shorts but I love that this blue is unexpected yet works! Great summer outfit for all kinds of fun! (Lot's of exclamation points!!)

outfit post: brown polka dot pretty woman dress

Inspiration - Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman

I tried this brown polka dot dress on at White House Black Market (um, what? I thought they only sold clothes in black and white?) and immediately fell in love. It fit me perfectly and conjured up dreams that I was Julia Roberts at the Polo match in Pretty Woman - so while I typically avoid buying anything at full price, I decided to splurge on it. I am so glad I did!

It's one of those multipurpose dresses - I could wear it to work with a cardigan and pumps, wear it on a date or to dinner with family, it would work for a wedding or a babyshower or if I ever have the pleasure of being invited... a polo match! And I think that the print it classic and timeless. If the style worked for Julia in the late 80s and still looks sophisticated and appropriate for today - I think I can bet on wearing this for many years to come!

outfit post: pink sweater, white shorts, pendant necklace

Something about this outfit reminds me of Miami - maybe the color palette of the neutral and white with the hint of gold? I would wear this to brunch at a nice restaurant or to do sightseeing on vacation in an Europen city in the summer. Or probably to run errands at Target.

     Light pink sweater - F21
Bottom:

outfit posts: instyle "your look - all about ease - barbecue"

Inspiration - InStyle June 2012 - All About Ease - Barbeque

I love the "Your Look" section of Instyle Magazine. It it my favorite article of each issue. I'm thinking of making it a regular monthly fashion attempt each month here. Although - I never buy clothes for this blog (I try to never buy for the blog but instead only find pictures that inspire from clothes I already own.) and sometimes I don't own any similar pieces to their article. I guess I will cross that bridge next month. :P

I decided to try to create two looks from the June issue. The first picnic look is here. For the barbeque look - the article says, "Show off a peasant blouse against simple denim shorts. Look for accessories that play up the boho feel, such as fringed bag and beaded thongs."

Because my boho top had pink accents instead of blue - I swapped the jean short for pink. I added a chevron shaped gold necklace - I didn't have a dagger pendant like the article - I think the feel of my necklace is similar to the inspiration. And again I didn't have a fringe bag to copy exactly but the cross body mint colored mini messenger seems both current color-wise and a throw back to 70s/boho leather bags shape & style. I really like this look and am ready for some grilled food and maybe a game of volleyball!

Bottom:
Pink shorts - Ann Taylor Loft
Shoes:

Accessories:

P.S. I submitted these to InStyle Magazine inspired by InStyle section at the beginning of the magazine. How cool would it be if I got picked? Doubtful but a girl can hope! :)

outfit post: bright chevron dress, rust cardigan

Inspiration - J's Everyday Fashion

Yay for Forever 21 & their cheap dresses! I found this dress for $20 and then a few days later J from J's Everyday Fashion did a post on the very same dress. How wonderfully convenient to have someone randomly help you style a new dress. J does more brights at one time in her outfits then I typically do, I tried a teal cardigan like her at first but felt a little to crayola-y bright, so I swapped to a rusty colored one and felt more comfortable. Such a fun pretty dress for so many summer activities!

outfit posts: coal top, printed pencil skirt, wedges

Inspiration - La Vie Petite

I love this look! The simple printed skirt (mine is little diagonal squares - not giraffe) with the bright colored top are a perfect combination. I wore this outfit twice recently - first to grab lunch with some girlfriends and then I added a white cardigan and closed toed shoes and wore this to work.

outfit posts: blue plaid shirt, jean shorts

Inspiration - Rachel Bilson

Some days you just want to be a bum. But I like it when you can at least be a cute bum. Rachel Bilson has one of my favorite casual everyday styles. Cool, laid-back & comfortable - perfect for a hot summer day. The plaid shirt and jean shorts are almost country bumpkin but with cute accessories (I really want a pair of Wayfarer sunglasses!) like sunglasses and big gold watch with fun shoes - I think the look becomes intentional instead of I accidentally just left the farm.

This is a fun colorful outfit that I love now that I'm wearing it but would never have thought of on my own. I love the bright red/orange with the white pants and pop of teal in the necklace. It feels casual and summery and happy.

outfit post: denim pencil skirt, maroon camp shirt, floral scarf

Inspiration - Kendi Everyday

I'm always looking for new ways to wear basic work clothes. I typically tend toward jewelry to make basic pieces more exciting but I feel like there is a whole world of dressing up outfits with scarves that I have yet to explore. Here is my first attempt with inspiration from Kendi Everyday. Basic pencil skirt, plain blouse and then pop of color pattern from the scarf. I like it but think I need to revisit on of those Pinterest pins on ways to tie a scarf...
