outfit post: navy blouse, striped jersey pencil skirt, brown peep toed pumps

Inspiration - Kelly Ripa

Phewww. After 20 hours of travel Saturday and another 20 hours of sleeping Sunday I'm slowly starting to turn back into a normal human being again. I really love the opportunity I get to travel to cool places and work with interesting people but after a week of all day workshops, morning & night team meals and extended hours of coworker bonding -- my introvert social batteries get completely depleted. Looking forward to a week of low social interaction and lots of extra catch-up sleep!

This skirt was a recent impulse buy at Old Navy. I think this type of striped pencil skirt has been a trend for a few years now but because I already have a navy polka-dot skirt I thought I had my "navy patterned pencil skirt" category covered in my closet. I just randomly gabbed it to try on and ended up loving it. Unlike my structured navy pencil skirt - this skirt is soft and stretchy. It's basically like wearing a tube sock. A very cute & flattering tube sock. Because of the soft stretchy fabric it seems a lot more casual to me then my other skirt - so I think this will be fun to wear in hot summer months with sandals.

  1. I'm fascinated by how well you match your inspiration pictures. What's your process for choosing inspirational pics? Do you sort by color or wardrobe item, etc?

    1. There are basically two methods I use to find 'inspiration' images to use for posts:

Scroll through Pinterest, Us Weekly, celebrity fashion blogs and regular blogs and pin any outfit that resembles a piece/pieces of clothing I already own. I pin a lot. The inspiration might just be the shape of the clothes or more often it's the color combination of the outfit. And when it's time to get dressed - I pull up the Pinterest folder and use an already saved inspiration photo to put my outfit together.

The second method is I am in the mood to wear something and I reverse search for some celebrity or clothing store model wearing something remotely similar. I might want to wear my pink pencil skirt so I start googling "pink pencil skirt celeb" or "pink pencil skirt nicole" swapping in general celeb names like "reese, paris, jennifer, rachel, britney" until I find some passable image that I can use. Or I will browse a site like Net-a-Porter for a similar item because I know they always have an outfit picture with each piece of clothing.

    1. I think you have to find right store that cuts for your body type. I've tried a BUNCH on from other stores and they were all weird on me - then I was surprised when this Old Navy skirt fit.

But I find that I get excited when I finally find a store that has a certain item that is cut to fit my shape - it seems like five minutes later they change their styling and I have to start over again.
