one suitcase: paris vacation capsule wardrobe

Post 7/7 -
Between my job & my love of seeing new places around the world I spend a fair amount of time living out of a suitcase. From all the experience I have gained from hauling myself & my stuff all over the place I have learned just how valuable packing smart & packing light is to your sanity. And I think I have gotten pretty good at selecting just my few favorite pieces of clothing to bring and stretching their use though multiple outfits for multiple activities as I travel.

The purpose of the "One Suitcase" feature is to try to show you how you can pare down your packing list when you travel without sacrificing the number or variety of outfits you have for the range of activities your trip may entail. I have learned through trial and error (and the pain of lugging wayyy too big a suitcase) that by packing a few favorite & versatile pieces of clothing I can mix and match the items into a surprising number of outfit options. You just have to do a little planning up front. Hopefully the posts this week will show you my method and help you find the potential of the clothes you already have in your closet!

The graphic above are the 12 piece and 20 outfit options I put together for my trip to Paris!

And below you can find a new checklist graphic that I'm super excited about! It has the 12 individual items listed on the left and then those items combined into the 20 outfits on the right - in what I hope is an easy to follow manner. The idea is it could help as a checklist for packing or a reference list of combinations while traveling! I'm such a nerd but I totally love lists/organizing. I hope you find it helpful if you'd decide to try packing something similar. I really hope you like it!! :)

In case you missed - it the previous posts in the series can be found here:
And finally here's how I put together my packing list-

The method:
  1. Basics - First I pick some basics pieces to lay the foundation for the trip. I try to pick my favorite go-to clothes. Clothes I know I wear over and over. The ones that go with almost everything. For me, this usually involves  laying out favorite pair of jeans and favorite white blouse.

For the basics in this capsule wardrobe I have chosen are grey sweater, white blouse, little black dress, black skinny jeans and black cropped pants.

  • Interest - Second, I add a few interesting pieces to compliment the subtle basics. I look for pops of color or fun patterns or even texture that will make the basic pieces more exciting. I try to grab items that will compliment each other or at least be somewhat in the same color scheme. For this trip I tried to stick to blues & greens in what I hoped were sophisticated prints.

For this set of interest pieces I picked a green blouse, a blue oxford shirt, a striped shirt, a chambray shirt and two jackets.

  • Accessories & Shoes - Finally, I add some accessories to complete the outfits. Jewelry, belts and scarves take up very little room and can dramatically alter how an outfit looks. Shoes is the area I still struggle with. (I always want to bring just one more pair!) But I've learned to limit myself to only either blacks or browns and then nude/beige shoes go with everything.

For this capsule wardrobe I chose two necklaces, three scarves and one gold watch.  For shoes I packed a pair of black flats and a pair of black boots.

  • Really hope you enjoyed this post!! :)

(*Will add the proof of concept pictures of the items in my on Sunday.)

    9. I just found your website this week on cruisecritic.com while planning my July Alaska cruise. I am older and a bit heavier than you but I think many of your things would work for me - not just on vacation but the wardrobe planning will help year round!! So - I've adopted the Paris collection for my cruise wear AND as a baseline for improving my closet.

      1. The closest I currently have is this one: http://www.outfitposts.com/2012/11/one-suitcase-business-casual-capsule_6313.html

But I'd like to do a 'starter work wardrobe' one as soon as my silly job stops demanding so much of my time. :)

    11. Is there a PDF for this checklist? I was trying to print it out like the carryon and I must be doing something wrong. I wasn't sure if I should try to use another computer, or if maybe this one was not set up as a PDF. I love love love your blog. My husband and I are planning a trip to the UK and I am using this as a template.

    13. Hi M.K., I've been keeping up with your blog for a while now, and used this post as a guide to pack for a Europe trip this spring. I loved the way it worked out so much that I was inspired to create a travel capsule wardrobe of my own for an upcoming cruise to Alaska. Gave you a shout out in my blog post about it! http://www.somuchtoenjoy.com/travel-capsule-wardrobe-alaska-cruise/
