outfit post: green army jacket, white t, boyfriend jeans, ankle booties

Inspiration - Rachel Bilson

I'm definitely still trying to figure these ankle boots out. This outfit feels 'eh' at best. My first attempt to wear them here made me look stumpy. My second outfit with them here was a little better but not amazing. When I see pictures of celebrities and pass girls on the street wearing ankle boots - I think they look SO COOL but on me I keep feeling short, chunky and awkward. Not good feelings from an outfit. If I can't get them to work after a few more tries then I'm just going to have to chalk it up to wrong trend for my body type...

  1. I totally agree with you on the booties - I am a little older than you (probably old enough to be your mom!) but just can't make them work for me. On another note YOU and your blog have inspired me to do so much with my wardrobe! Trying to with fewer clothes (Project 333 blog) and your daily posts have definitely helped. Look forward to you every morning.

  2. I think this outfit totally works - but it's the cut of the jeans. Rachel's jeans are probably ankle jeans, and yours look like full length boot cut (right?). I think if you go with a skinnier ankle jean this look would be awesome. And I hear you on feeling too old to pull off some stuff... but I think you do ankle boots well!

  3. i know what you mean about these boots. My legs are short and stumpy and I don't even attempt them, but you inspire me to think of trying.
I agree with Sarah's comment above. I was going to point out that maybe a tighter/skinny jean might work. And maybe a less "floppy" jacket? although I love this jacket and keep looking for something similar in stores.

  4. Maybe try some jeans with a smaller leg opening?

  5. I can't get this look to work for me either, but that could have something to do with my 5'1 frame. Eh. I agree with previous comments though - slimmer pant leg may help. Also, maybe if the height of the bootie could be folded down? I think the place that the top of the bootie hits your leg may give the appearence of a shorter leg (the "stumpy" look you were referring to). But I think this look would look totally cute on you, so don't give up!!

  6. Hmm, I think it's the height of the boot in comparison to how much leg is shown. In your second attempt with the shorter dress, I think the boots look great, actually. In the first attempt and this attempt, since the skirt and these jeans are longer and show less leg, it does tend to cut off a bit. The inspiration photo's boots are a bit shorter and more tapered to her ankles which elongates her leg.

I agree with the above posters who said to wear a skinnier leg and see if that works.

  7. I'm only 5'0, but I rock ankle booties all the time...love them! I think the height & chunkiness of your boots & the thickness of the cuffed jeans make this look odd. Maybe a slimmer cut jean & a more streamlined, shorter bootie (witout all the straps). Good luck! don't give up!

  9. I agree with many of the other comments. You might try shorter and/or skinnier pants. I really think its that particular boot that is causing some of your issues. I'm pretty short and for the longest time, I didn't think I could wear ankle boots either. But then I found that boots that are cut a little lower and show more of my ankle don't make my legs look "stumpy."

  10. I agree also. Try a skinny jean and also increase the amount of ankle shown (ie. roll the jeans an extra time)which will elongate your legs. I am 5'2" and frequently need to add an extra roll to pull off a celeb look! Thanks for your daily inspiration! :) Blessings!

  11. I agree with previous posters. You're on the cusp of awesome - the jeans just need to be a bit more tapered. I love the outfit inspo though! That bilson sure knows how to work it!

  12. I have had boot issues too. It's taken me a while to figure them out but now I have about 4 pairs.

I'm 5'9" but I have quite short legs so I can look a bit stumpy if I don't wear the right trouser/boot combo. I think skinny jeans tucked into boots similar to your picture, or leggings/tights look best. Or boots that are lower down on the ankle and closer fitting.

Thanks for your fab real person style inspiration. x

  13. Yay! You guys are so helpful!! Thanks for all the great advice!! I really, really appreciate it.

I will start keeping my eyes open for a inexpensive pair of tapered jeans to wear with these boots. :)

  14. I don't think it's the jeans. I think it's the booties. They are a little tall (def taller than hers and prob the ones you like on others) and the straps make them seem somewhat chunkier.
